The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates: International Consensus on the Rightfulness of Palestine's Full Membership in the United Nations

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine has welcomed the overwhelming vote and international consensus in a crucial international body, the United Nations General Assembly, on a resolution affirming the right of the State of Palestine to full membership and granting it additional rights and privileges within the United Nations and its various institutions and subsidiaries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates affirmed the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly today, Friday, May 10, 2024, of a resolution concerning Palestine's membership in the organization. The resolution received support from 143 countries, while 9 countries opposed it, and 25 countries abstained from voting.

The ministry pointed out that this resolution confirms that Palestine meets all the requirements stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations, especially Article Four, thereby deserving and qualifying for full membership in the United Nations.

The ministry emphasized that today's vote is a clear message of confirmation from the international community of the natural, legal, and historical right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, their aspirations for liberation, independence, and living on their land in security and peace like all other peoples of the world.

It added that this step is part of efforts aimed at protecting and maintaining the two-state solution based on ending colonial occupation and the Israeli apartheid regime and achieving peace and stability in the region, despite the historical injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people since the Nakba in 1947 until now, manifested today in the worst forms in the genocide and war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Israeli killing machine against our people in the Gaza Strip for over 217 days.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that enhancing Palestine's status in the United Nations is a reinforcement of peace and diplomatic, multilateral, law-based solutions, and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed its gratitude to the countries that sponsored and voted in favor of the resolution, and renewed its call to the countries supporting the two-state solution and security and stability in the region to recognize Palestine bilaterally. It called on the countries that voted against the resolution or abstained from voting to review their positions and stand on the right path, the path of justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people in their march to attain all their legitimate rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination on their land, the independence of the State of Palestine, and the return of refugees to their homes from which they were displaced in implementation of Resolution 194.
